CenterPoint Energy, the Houston based utility serving electric and natural gas customers across Texas and Indiana, confirmed in a Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on September 14 that an unauthorized third party obtained customer personal information through one of the company’s external facing systems. The company said it learned of the incident after a threat actor posted online claiming to possess a dataset containing customer records, and that it activated its incident response protocols, engaged third party cybersecurity experts, and notified law enforcement. CenterPoint has not confirmed the attacker’s own claim of roughly 7.49 million affected records, or verified the authenticity of the leaked dataset, and said its investigation into the scope of affected customers and data types is ongoing.
For a regulated utility, the stakes of a customer data breach extend past the usual identity theft exposure. CenterPoint told the SEC its electric and gas delivery operations were not disrupted and remain fully operational, drawing a clear line between an IT side data exposure and any risk to grid or pipeline control systems, a distinction CyberTech has seen matter in other public sector breach disclosures this month. The company also said it does not currently believe the incident is reasonably likely to have a material financial impact, a securities law judgment call that will be tested if the 7.49 million figure holds up.
The original insight here is a disclosure pattern, not a technical one. Like the recent vendor credential breach at Veradigm, CenterPoint’s filing confirms unauthorized access without confirming scope, volume, or data categories, leaving customers and regulators to rely on an unverified criminal’s claims for the numbers that actually matter to a risk assessment. Utilities holding partial Social Security numbers and billing data at scale should treat that gap, between confirmed and merely alleged, as the thing incident response now has to close fastest, not last.
